Rick Raftos Management was founded by Rick, its founder and managing director in 1985 after he had become involved in the entertainment industry as a lawyer representing many of the industry unions such as Actors’ Equity and the Writer’s’ Guild, the latter which he consulted for over ten years. During his years with the Guild, Rick was responsible for drafting and negotiating many of the industry agreements and model contracts that have now been accepted as industry standards.
The agency, which has now been going for over 25 years, was initially founded to represent performing arts writers but quickly expanded into representing writers in all media, directors and, more recently, creative producers. The agency has also been instrumental in launching the careers of some of Australia’s most successful authors, some of which who have turned their books into films.
The client list is shared amongst two agents, Rick Raftos and Wanda Blanch. Both agents have specific expertise in different areas of the industry.
The agency works closely with clients in developing projects and then putting them into the marketplace. While the negotiation of the deal remains a central function, the agency plays an active role in giving clients creative support and feedback, in packaging projects with key creatives in order to increase marketability and assisting in finding producers or co-producers, pre-sales, distribution commitments or whatever is needed to get the project to production.
